Science Challenge

May 26th, 2008 by bazza

This is a place for Mrs McCartney to leave a comment on our science challenge that we have every week.

This week  our challenge was to find out what was that oldest thing we will ever see.

Guess: A diamond found in Brizil

Answer: It is a star only seen in autumn.

This week our challenge is to find out how many squares are in a checkerboard all sizes.

Guess: 122

Answer:102

This week our science challenge is…

In the last holidays, my nephew came over to stay with me in Warrnambool.  The weather was pretty bad, so we spent a lot of time indoors playing games…..but there was a sweetner attached to this fun, and we each earned a few yummy Bertie Beetles.

Everyday, at 11am we would play a game of chess. Whoever lost the game owed a Bertie  Beetle to the other. After the last game we played (that was the day he had to leave), we counted the number of games each of us had won and lost.   Drats! He had won more than me.

So, I handed him 18 Bertie Beetles… though I myself was the winner in 6 games.

How many days did my nephew spend at my house in Warrnambool?

 Guess: 30

Answer: 32

Fair trade

May 14th, 2008 by bazza

Farmers forever out in the fields picking the coffee from the trees.

All they get is 1 cent out of every dollar made.

Are the big companies being fair? No! They are not!

Ridicules how hard the farmers work.

Trusting the companies to be fair. But they tern around and stab them in the back.

Rise of the sun, off the farmers go for a days work.

As the coffee is getting made, families are dieing in there homes.

Dieing people begging for food which could have been prevented if the farmers got more money

Eat says a mother to her son.

Nuclear weapons

May 6th, 2008 by bazza

Dear world leaders, Nuclear weapons are very dangerous. The uranium can get into the skin and do serious damage to your blood, cells and organs. Even worse it can kill you.  The detonation of a nuclear weapon would totally wipe out entire countries and hundreds of thousands of people would die, in only a few seconds.  Surprisingly, even though we know all the facts, nine countries still have nuclear weapons. Those countries are France, Pakistan, Israel, Russia, China, USA, North Korea, UK and India. Today’s Nuclear weapons are 20,000 times stronger then the Hiroshima A bomb. The death toll from the explosion and the fallout of that bomb was 200,000 deaths over a number of weeks and months. The black acid rain killed people weeks after the explosion.  I’m only 11 and I want to live my life to the full. We need to abolish nuclear weapons for us to be able to do that safely. As a beginning point, we need to get the nuclear weapons off high alert. At least then, there is less likelihood of an accidental bombing. After that, the countries need to get together and discuss abolishing these devastating weapons altogether. If kids can think like this, why can’t world leaders? If you would like to learn more about this subject, visit the website www.ican.w.org  From Bailey

debate 08

May 5th, 2008 by bazza

This year I was in debating at schoool. I was not a specker but i was  chairperson.

Chairperson, fellow debaters and members of the audience.

As second speaker I would like to rebut the negative team when they say ……. (Rebut……….)Our team believes that students should be able to own and use their own mobile phones.

Mobile phones are now very valuable to students. Parents feel that their children are safer carrying mobile phones in case of emergencies or if they are running late.  This gives children more independence on walking or riding to their destination. This takes transportation off the roads which is environmentally-friendly and great exercise. If children didn’t have a phone they could be bullied, abducted and their parents would never know about it.

Like many other things for example (friends, fellow pupils or simply something out the window)mobile phones can be distracting in class but if students simply turn them off in class this will no longer be a problem. Many schools let children take phones to school but they must be turned off in lessons.

Anything can be abused such as pencils and paper. New technology usually carries some risks but we should not panic about this. Children have used their phones to look at inappropriate photos gamble and bully but these problems were happening long before mobile phones were even invented.

These problems won’t go away by just sitting their and doing nothing. The only way we can stop these problems is to talk to parents about these issues and moral education.

Moral education means: relating to issues of right and wrong and to how individual people should behave.  Another thing, children have always pressured their parents to have the latest things such as iPods, MP3’s, portable DVD players or even laptops. Kids pressure their parents to buy these things so they can fit in with other kids.

In the meantime parents can purchase cheap phones that block inappropriate programs such as gambling or access to looking at inappropriate photos, and make sure children do not have access to credit cards to pay for the programs.

Our team believes that children should be able to own their own mobile phones.

My buddies name is Jack and he didn’t bring a teddy but a toy bus. We had to ask them questions such as how old is he and put it in a powerpoint.

Then we had to record them answering our questions.
